Tube 4 You: Mike Leach

Posted by TxHny on November 9, 2007

There were so many, I had a very, very hard time selecting.

And a pirate can beat a soldier. Extra nice, because it spites Texas A&M.

Mike Leach doesn’t tolerate your tears, pouting, general bad mood.

Texas Tech Hate Week Day 2 – “When did Colorado get good?”

Posted by gingerut on November 7, 2007

I can’t decide which headline I like better: “Colorado ends 10-game losing skid with rout of Texas Tech” or “Harrell’s 4 INTs too much as Colorado rolls Texas Tech

The Last 2 Weeks

Posted by dahorns on November 7, 2007

Hi kids! Sorry for not posting game reviews, school has gotten hectic. Anyways, the last 2 weeks have probably witnessed some of the worst and some of the best this team has to offer. Like most good people, I love roller coasters. You get to go really fast with lots of sudden changes in direction, all without later explaining to an officer that a large spider jumped in your lap. That being said, roller coasters are only fun because you know at some point they’ll end and you’ll be allowed to leave. This team is a roller coaster, without safety belts, large sections of missing track, and no photograph at the end. Anyways…

1. Jamaal Charles has been amazing. Remember when I said Jamaal needed to sit and earn back his playing time after OU? Yeah…. how does this sound 476 yards on 49 carries for a 9.7 yards per carry average. Even more impressive 327 of those yards came on 17 carries in the 4th carry for a 19.2 yard per carry average. Jamaal had 5 touchdowns in the 4th quarter of the last 2 games.

2. Colt McCoy has become an amazing rusher. He has shown us moves that no one could have possibly thought he had, including some sick displays of balance, and one SWEET spin move. His passing hasn’t been great, but he has been clutch in the 4th quarter. Tebow eat your heart out.

3. Anyone else feel more confident when our defense is facing 3rd and 3, than when we D up against 3rd and 10+? Of course, it is getting to the point where I am more confident in winning games when we are down by at least 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter, than when we are ahead by 7… whatever that means.

4. I just had to mention that Kansas scored 76 against Nebraska.

5. Seriously… 76… Kansas.

6. Michigan jumped us in the AP Poll. They of course were down by 10 in the 4th to Michigan State. Were they more impressive in coming back down from less? Or maybe it could be their losses weren’t as bad as ours. Let’s see, Loss to a top 5 team = check, loss to an unranked team = check… oh oh wait, that’s right, they lost to a DIV IAA (or what was formerly IAA) school!

7. Adrian Peterson! I remember him being good, I don’t remember him being an unstoppable killing machine capable of enslaving the NFL and making LT look like a scrub. Imagine if he had a QB!

Texas Tech Hate Week Day 1 – “I kinda like you, but not really”

Posted by gingerut on November 6, 2007

So these posts should have been started Sunday morning but I was too busy spying on the enemy in the land of Red Raiders to get to a computer. And yesterday? It was a Monday; give me a break. So today marks the beginning of Texas Tech Hate Week. Each day will be a new reason (or reasons) to hate, and yet love, our rival in Lubbock.

Today I’ll kick it off with some top 5 lists.

1. Red and Black: I’m sorry, but those colors just don’t look good.
2. No Alcohol: A dry city?!?!? How is a college student supposed to survive? Especially with the prices they have down at the strip. I’ve never seen Lonestar more expensive in my life.
3. Lubbock: It smells like oil and cow manure. Yes, I know its the smell of money but it doesn’t mean I want to smell it all day every day. And its far away from the rest of the world. And there is nothing there, and …. I could keep going.
4. Offense (or lack there of): As much as I love the spread offense I can’t stand a team without a good defense. How do they expect to play real school? Its only fun to watch them beat cupcakes for so long.
5. The Students: Yes, many of the people closest to me go to (or have graduated from) Texas Tech. As much as I love them, it doesn’t mean I love the rest of the student population. It’s not that they are bad people, it’s just that they are like that annoying little brother who thinks they are cool enough (and have a good enough football team) to hang out with you.

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything good about our Red Raider friends….

1. Mike Leach: Who doesn’t love to hear a crazy coach talk? Besides Mack, he is my favorite football coach. What other coach makes up the plays as he goes appears drunk 99% of the time?
2. Chimy’s Margaritas: Oh how I love thee. If only we had a Chimy’s in Austin (or Houston).
3. Pirates: I’ve always been a fan of pirates. And coaches who make up new mascots.
4. Umm…..Chimy’s Margaritas: Yes, I have them twice. They are just that good, and I can’t think of anything else.
5. This video:
Anyone that likes to piss off okies is good in my book.

Feel free to add to the lists and I’ll be back tomorrow for Texas Tech Hate Week Day 2 – “When did Colorado get good?”

It’s Business, It’s Business Time

Posted by RubyLynn on November 2, 2007

“Then you go sort out the recycling, which isn’t part of the foreplay, but it’s still very important.”

David Wright. New York Mets. After seeing him on the Daily Show this week, he’s my new athlete crush. Now if only we can get him out of those pleated pants.

Going bowling with kids makes David deserve TWO pictures this week.

Kate Beckinsale, at the suggestion of Nathan at Amsterdam.

Wow. Great suggestion. If only I didn’t like men so much… she just might turn me into a lesbian.

Nothin’ like a bit o’ girl on girl!

ISU Game Notes

Posted by dahorns on October 16, 2007

First, I actually missed a majority of the second half because I had to drive to Forth Worth for wedding. Don’t worry, I listened on the radio. I know, I know, what type of friends schedule a wedding on a game day? To be fair to them, they were attempting to schedule around OU and the wedding didn’t actually start until 6. Forth Worth just happens to be pretty far away. This will just be some quick game notes because I really didn’t see that much of the game.

1. Colt F’n McCoy. Welcome back young man. This looked like the guy I saw last year. This looked like the guy that had some type of magical awareness of the exact inch where the line of scrimmage started. This looked like the guy that wasn’t afraid to take the ball and run with it. Yeah, this was Iowa State… but this also looked like Texas. How often have we really been able to say that this year?

2. Kindle! This guy needs to start. He enters the game and all the sudden that pesky running back that was gashing us for yards is being stopped COLD. One on one. He hits hard and he hits fast.

3. Quan Cosby is the best player on this football team. I’d elaborate, but if you didn’t realize it already you’re probably too brain dead to operate a computer.

4. Our secondary is pretty damn good. When the QB doesn’t have a year to throw, these guys are staying right on the receivers. Blythe is one of the best receivers in the country this year and is a serious NFL talent. Palmer stayed with him all game long. Good job.

5. Colt as a leader
About time.

I’ll post more comprehensive notes once I get a chance to watch the replay. A game like this is always good for the team’s confidence. I usually try to temper my enthusiasm after a game against a 1 win team, but this team really needed to put together a complete game. No mistakes. Good job guys.

The Texas Toast

Posted by RubyLynn on October 9, 2007

Toast: Amsterdam Cafe

This week’s Texas Toast is to the brand new Amsterdam Cafe. On the corner of 8th and Colorado, it’s conveniently located and is a welcome addition to the downtown Austin bar scene.

Why do we love this bar so much? Let us count the ways.

— “I want something… you know… with Rum. Yeah, rum! and um…. fruity. But not really sweet. You know?? No syrupy stuff,” and BAM, Nate (perhaps our new favorite bartender) pulls out something perfect, with a cherry on top. Oh, and plenty of your favorite brews on tap and in the bottle.

— You want to go where everyone knows your name? Well, this place is for you. A new bar on the scene – hang around often enough and you could say, “Hey Nate. Hey other Nate. Chis, Malcom (the guys that run the joint)- what’s going on? Meet my friend _____, she’s in town from _______ and I thought I’d bring her by my bar.”

— Ugh. Parking on 6th (and 5th and 4th) street is so frustrating. Well, that’s no problem here. Amsterdam Cafe is on 8th street, between Colorado and Congress.

— Like to go to classy joints like Speakeasy, Brown Bar and Malaga? Hate paying 9 bucks for a cocktail? Amsterdam has what you want for what you want to pay. Hip, clean and impressive bar selection that won’t break the bank.

— Come on by, you might catch us there.

Best Thing I’ve Seen In A While…

Posted by TxHny on September 23, 2007

You know, before I saw John Chiles get some playing time.

You may have already seen this, it plays practically all day Saturday and Sunday, plus I’m sure Deadspin and others have picked it up. Still, watch it again. Soooo awesome.

Post game update by dahorns soon. And we owe you a Texas Toast. Sorry, busy week for txhny and themaskedwino.

We’re not supposed to show you this but…

Posted by RubyLynn on September 6, 2007

We couldn’t help ourselves. College football fans everywhere deserve to know who’s responsible for the return to normal clock rules. So from all of us at Gabriel’s Horn, you’re welcome. We received the following memo from the NCAA a while back, and thought it would be a crime not to post it.

Our personal information has been redacted.

Since the Gabriel’s Horn is no Colin Cowherd we’d like to extend our own thanks to Wizard of Odds, CFBstats, the fans, and above all God for their assistance in our endeavor to keep the NCAA under our manicured thumb. Truly, we couldn’t do it without you.

Oh – and don’t think we haven’t noticed this new kickoff rule. We’re reserving judgment until a few conference games have been played, but NCAA Rules Committee – you’re on notice. If we don’t like it – the consequences will NOT be pretty.
